Let’s talk real estate! My favorite topic besides tacos, margarita and beaches. Whether you’re buying your first home or selling your beloved space, you’ve probably heard a thing or two about realtors that might not be 100% true.
There are a TON of amazing Realtors in every city, but have you befriended one and talked shop? A lot of the time when I begin to discuss my job with people, they think I just open doors and show houses. RED FLAG, RED FLAG, RED FLAG. Realtors do so much more for our community than hold the keys to homes! So, let’s dive into the biggest myths about Realtors — because knowledge is power, and finding your dream home should be fun!
Myth #1: Realtors are just in it for the money.
It’s easy to think that Realtors are only motivated by their commission, but that idea really oversimplifies what a Realtor does. While commission is part of the job, Realtors are also deeply invested in their clients’ success. In fact, most know that their reputation and future referrals depend on the quality of service they provide, not just closing a deal quickly. A Realtor’s goal is to ensure you have the best experience possible — whether that’s getting you into your dream home or helping you sell your property for top dollar. The hours spent negotiating, handling complex contracts, and providing personalized service far outweigh the financial reward.
The real value? Seeing clients walk away satisfied, knowing they’ve made the right decision with the right support. The long-term relationships that Realtors build are key to their success — not a quick payday. If I wanted a quick payday, trust me… I have other options!
Myth #2: Realtors can sell any house, anytime.
This myth assumes that a house will sell easily if you just hire a Realtor. The reality is, selling a home takes a combination of preparation, market knowledge, and patience. We work hard to price homes accurately, using their understanding of current trends, local market conditions, and recent comparable sales. Beyond that, we’re here to help you prepare the home for sale, from advising on repairs or upgrades to coordinating professional staging and photography. Consider us wearing a ton of hats and pretty damn well at that!
Once it’s on the market, we don’t just sit back and wait for buyers. Realtors actively market your home across multiple platforms, reaching out to their network, hosting open houses, and adjusting strategies as needed. Still, some homes take time to sell, depending on location, the market, and even the time of year. While a Realtor brings expertise and a solid plan to sell your home, the process can require patience and flexibility to get the best outcome.
Since COVID, the housing market has been SO difficult to pinpoint… but a good Realtor (like me) keeps you alerted on changes and encourage you on how to pivot your strategy to get you to the closing table!
Myth #3: Realtors only care about expensive homes.
Whether you’re shopping for a modest starter home or a sprawling estate, Realtors are there to help you find the right property for your needs. The idea that Realtors only focus on high-end listings is just plain wrong. A nice rule of thumb for being polite in initial conversations: don’t assume your property isn’t worth anything and don’t assume a Realtor won’t care to sell you a home in a lower budget.
A good Realtor knows that each client has different needs and priorities, and they treat every transaction with the same level of care and attention, regardless of the price tag. Every time I meet with my buyers or sellers, we go over a gameplan like we’re in the NFL. I can’t throw a football to save my life… but I can get you into the endzone! …That’s the closing table, if you’re keeping up with the football analogy.
Realtors understand that building long-term relationships is more important than chasing high commissions. Helping a client buy their first small home or sell a modest property is just as rewarding as closing on a luxury estate. Ultimately, their job is to help you find the home that fits your lifestyle and budget, whether that’s a downtown condo, a cozy suburban home, or a rural escape.
Myth #4: Realtors just show houses.
If you think a Realtor’s job starts and ends with showing you houses, you’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg. Truuuuust me, it goes so much more deep. Realtors spend a lot of time behind the scenes researching market conditions, preparing detailed reports, and strategizing the best ways to help you buy or sell. They are also experts in navigating the mountains of paperwork, managing inspections, arranging appraisals, and ensuring that all deadlines are met throughout the process. The level of investment and time spent varies across the board because we truly tailor every plan into a unique experience. No buyer or seller is the same!
When it comes to negotiations, a Realtor’s experience can save you thousands. They know how to advocate for their clients, ensuring you’re getting the best deal possible — whether you’re buying or selling. Plus, they’re pros at spotting potential issues that could derail a transaction, working to address any problems before they become deal-breakers.
So yes, they show houses, but that’s just one small part of the value they bring to the table.
Myth #5: Realtors work 9-to-5.
Oh, sweetie. If only that was true. Maybe I wouldn’t be stuck in late night drive-thrus during the week… Realtors don’t punch a clock when it comes to helping their clients. The real estate market moves quickly, and that often means working evenings, weekends, and outside of typical office hours. Realtors adjust their schedules to meet their clients’ needs, whether that’s scheduling showings after work, answering questions late at night, or responding to offers on the weekend.
I take calls, texts, and I’ve even stopped in during my vacation to help move things forward.
This flexibility is part of the job because the market doesn’t wait. We understand that buying or selling a home is a big deal, and we’re ready to provide guidance whenever you need it — no matter the time of day. …Unless it’s date night, then you’re on your own.
